Second Day of Junior Camp

Posted Jun 12,2009

Our campers arrived this morning eager for another day of fun, learning the game of a lifetime.  Today the kids were able to work on their tee shots on the range and had a 9 hole putting contest on the putting course.  They took a walk on the course and talked about etiquitte and safety-where to stand when someone is addressing their ball, when to talk and when to be quiet and what it means to respect the course and leave it as nice for the next player as the other players left it for them.

They watched a great video with famous golfers Arnold Plamer, Jack Nicklaus, Peter Jacobson and Nancy Lopez sharing the importance of calling penalties on yourself and scoring correctly.  I stopped by to catch a bit of the video and had a hard time breaking away-it was pretty good!

It's wonderful to have the opportunity to share the importance of integrity in the game of golf.  It made me think of that wonderful television spot (or was it circulating on the internet?) about golf being the only professional sport that rewards players for playing well and penalizes them for playing poorly, where you don't have to pay $100 to watch them play, cover your children's ears from the coarse language they're shouting at each other while they play and enjoy the beauty of nature thrown in for good measure.  I've always believed that the nicest people I've ever met were golfers.  I think the values the game encourages has a lot to do with that.

So check out the pictures I was able to get of our young sports today.
